Upgrading Microsoft operating systems (OSs) can be an expensive and risky proposition for information technology (IT) organizations. However, approaching end-of-life policies for old Windows Server systems can present as much risk. IT organizations are faced with “the carrot and the stick,” and must weigh the value offered by the new and enhanced features of latest releases (the carrot) against the risk of upgrade and the risk of diminishing support (the stick) to determine when to upgrade. Exploring the major features clarifies when upgrades for each class of workload should be performed compared with those that can wait until end-of-life support forces upgrades.
