Quick Network Incident Handling
Network performance is becoming more critical to the enterprise at the same time that it is becoming more difficult to manage. Modern application designs, such as those for web transactions, web services, and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), intertwine application, server, and network performance much more tightly than in the past. At the same time, enterprises are outsourcing parts of their networks, rendering those parts opaque to many network management tools. Constant change in the production environment adds to the problem, making the difficult task of keeping diagnostic tools updated even more difficult. Burton Group can assist our enterprise by providing an assessment of their current network management practices on their network incident handling process and provide recommendations to improve this important network management task. In this assessment Burton Group shall look specifically at:
- Tools that monitor the IT environment
- Procedures
- Application Environment
- Key performance indicators used
- Incident management process
- Problem resolution process
Burton Group will accomplish this task by collecting relevant network monitoring documentation such as:
- Current high-level documentation that describes current network monitoring tools
- Current network monitoring process documents
- Papers or diagrams describing current or planned network monitoring initiatives
- Other position papers or architectural diagrams that reflect the current network monitoring policies
- Organizational charts and mission statements detailing current areas of network monitoring responsibility
- Network and application reporting tools and procedures
Burton Group would then schedule a three-day on-site visit to interview key individuals responsible for network operations, network and application monitoring, and planning. Once the information has been gathered Burton Group shall provide an expert assessment of the current network and application monitoring environment and provide a summary report.
This report would include an assessment of the network and application monitoring tools in place, processes used as well as an overview of the organizational structure that supports the network monitoring process. Burton Group shall make specific recommendations based on current industry trends and best practices. Specifically the report shall include an analysis and recommendations of the:
- Network monitoring tool set
- Incident management process
- Problem management process
- Event management process
- Service Delivery framework
